CUNY Law -PILA Gala
What is PILA?
The Public Interest Law Association (PILA) is a student-run organization that throws an annual fundraising gala to provide summer fellowships to our law students. These fellowships allow our students to pursue summer public interest legal internships, which are typically unpaid.
Each year, PILA's gala honors individuals whose legal career demonstrates a steadfast dedication and commitment to the public interest legal field. For PILA's 24th Annual Gala, we are pleased to honor Seymour James of Legal Aid Society and Geoffrey Bickford of the New York City Criminal Court.
Seymour James is the attorney-in-chief of Legal Aid Society, the nation's oldest and largest nonprofit legal services organization. In overseeing a staff of 1,100 lawyers and over 700 social workers, investigators, paralegals, and support staff, James plays an extraordinary and consequential role in ensuring that underrepresented and poor New Yorkers receive the highest level of legal representation and equal justice.
Geoffrey Bickford is a 2008 CUNY School of Law alum. He is a court attorney for New York Supreme Court Judge Robert Mandelbaum. Prior to this role, Bickford worked at Legal Aid Society as a public defender.
